The world is full of fascinating places to explore and everyone loves to travel! But finding a budget-friendly travel location can be tricky for students. Here are our top five picks of travel locations for poor students like you and me so we'll not have to be sewing our pockets by the end of the trip.
#1 Seoul, South Korea

Photo creds: Dearest Dazzling Desiree ;) That's right, the land of Kpop and our favourite melodramatic Korean Dramas. With mouth-watering foods, bustling shopping destinations and exhilarating attractions, why go anywhere else when you have everything you need all at Seoul? From shopping for cosmetics at Myeongdong for the ladies to indulging in delicious street food for the extreme foodies, the party never ends! But what matters the most is- it doesn’t break your wallet! Airfare to Korea is relatively affordable, especially if you fly during off-peak periods and take budget airlines. Food and shopping is also budget friendly! Top budget Travel Tip: Stay in guest houses! There are plenty of small guest houses scattered around Seoul which are clean, comfortable, affordable and not dodgy at all, no worries about getting kidnapped. :-)
#2 Langkawi, Malaysia

Do not dismiss our neighbouring country just so quickly! Why not have a short getaway to this beautiful UNESCO Geopark tropical island, otherwise known as Langkawi. Enjoy snorkeling in the pristine coral reefs or sunbathe on unexplored remote islands, only accessible by boat. Known as a popular backpacking location, there is no surprise that the place is crowded with affordable hostels and other accommodations clustered around Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah. Travel and food is cheap too #exchageratebenefits. Top budget travel tip: Seafood is the island's specialty- the road parallel to Pantai Cenang is bordered by lanes of restaurants offering plates of scrumptious seafood delight. The tiger prawns, seafood tom yum and steamed sea bass are MUST TRYs! #yumzzz
#3 Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne is known for its pristine white beaches, great ocean drives and fresh seafood but is it budget friendly? Yes it can be! Due to the weakening Australian dollar against the Singapore dollar, travelling to Australia has become cheaper! The first way to save money is to fly there by budget airlines! There are many budget airlines which offer great deals for affordable flights to Australia, including Scoot, Jetstar or Tigerair. Always take advantage of free attractions if possible- try visiting Royal Botanic Gardens, the South Melbourne Market or the wild penguins at St Kilda’s pier, absolutely FOC!! Top budget travel tip: Eating out at restaurants can be expensive in Australia, try buying fresh produce from the local market and be your chef for the day!
#4 Hong Kong

#mainstream but it's definitely popular for a reason! A bustling city not unlike Singapore, Hong Kong offers a familiar yet different travel experience. Termed the ‘dim sum heaven’, affordable and tasty food can be found anywhere and everywhere in Hong Kong. One such example is Kam Wah cafe, famous for it’s Bo Lo Baos (‘pineapple-like' buns) at just $1. The delicious buns are crunchy on the outside and soft and warm on the inside. If you’re in it for the shopping, you may want to head down to Ladies Street with over 100 stalls selling all sorts of items. An excellent place to test your bargaining deals!!
Budget travel tip: Don’t be afraid to explore the backstreets and try out street food! Some of the best and most affordable HK cuisine may not be found on travel blogs!
#5 New York, USA

This last one is a bit of a cheeky one. Strictly speaking, New York would not be a budget friendly travel location for Singapore students simply because of the airfare which costs a bomb. However, we're including this one to consider as an extended trip when you're on exchange. Universities in the US are popular exchange destinations for many students and wouldn’t it just make sense to extend your travel to pay a visit to the Statue of Liberty after flying all the way there?
New York may the city that never sleeps but you don't want to lose sleep over stress of busting your budget! Buy a subway pass, it gives you unlimited rides for a week, very cost-efficient! Take advantage of freebies - some attractions are free all the time, including the iconic Central Park and Staten Island Ferry, which offers marvellous views of NY Harbour. Budget travel tip: To avoid booking dodgy hostels without even knowing, try Airbnb. Remember to read through reviews so you know the deal you're getting is legit and value for money.
