5 Essentials Every Male Business Student Must Have

#1 A Suit That Actually Fits

As business students, we are always down for presentations, interviews and seminars. #sian

A blazer and tie is a necessity for the formal occasion. There was this once, I was scheduled to go for an interview. My friend advised me to wear a blazer to live up to the occasion. However, I was rather skeptical about his advice- "blazer and tie? seriously...? interview nia..." When I arrived at the office for the scheduled group interview, I never felt more like an odd ball. From their perfectly fitted suits to unique colour combinations of grey, navy blue and black shirts with a twist of surprise shouting from their brightly coloured ties, I really should've tried harder.

Above all, always get a suit that fits. It should be tailored to your shoulder length and your pants should just nicely tapered down to your shoes. It is all about a matter of presentation. A suit is a symbol of power. A nicely fitted suit will give you a crisp look, ready to take on any interviews or presentations. So why look sloppy when you can be #dapper and professional?

Fun tip: When unsure, always start with black. It is a professional colour that will never go wrong.

#2 Briefcase That Complements Your Suit

Super important but also one of the most neglected item. Can you imagine wearing a suit while carrying a Nike sports bag or a Fjallraven Kanken bag? Shag balls... yeah. You look pathetic. Boys... or rather MEN, please, invest in a decent briefcase or a business-carry to go with your suit. Like myself, most of you probably think it is a complete waste of money, considering the pathetic number of times you actually use it. A decent briefcase will easily set you back at least a hundred bucks. Not having to quote those overused statistics, I'm sure we all know first impressions count. Dressing appropriately with the right accessories make you look smart and empowers you with a sense of confidence with every stride you take.

#3 A Nice Smell

We mean cologne. :-) I guess you could do without this although we would strongly recommend it. Everytime someone wearing a suit or business casual walk past you, you would often catch a whiff of their light and manly scented cologne. Simple explanation: Just like when you meet a girl for the first time on a date, you'd want to smell fresh and clean instead of like pungent armpit sweat. #eww We all like people who smell nice. End of story.

#4 Pomade/ Waxes/ Clays

Your face is the first thing that people notice. A man's hair is like his mane. Please, please please do something about it. You literally have unlimited choices of hair products in the market. With the great variation of possible hairstyles that can be fashionable and neat at the same time, you will definitely find something that fits. You can't feel good till you know you're looking good!

#5 Pen/ Name Cards

A pen is mightier than the sword. Even though they are less commonly used by business students, they are still essentials that we should have. Get a professional looking pen and nope we do not mean your Uni Ball Signo or a Pilot G2, those are lame..... We mean something more like a fountain pen. Now you can not only use this pen to take notes, it adds on to that #dapper look of yours- killing two birds with one stone. :-)

Yeah we're students and we probably do not own name cards..... YET. For the next five times you eat chicken rice, just try to stop yourself from asking for additional meat and that would save you enough money to print your own name card. :-) You never know when a name card would come in handy. Business is all about opportunities, so grab onto it before it's gone. Besides, what would look more professional and feel more grown-up than having your own name card?
